Hiking Sunset Peak, Hong Kong: Finding Wild Nature in a Concrete Jungle
Hiking Sunset Peak, Hong Kong
Hong Kong isn’t just skyscrapers and dim sum—it’s also misty mountains and epic hikes. Sunset Peak on Lantau Island (third-highest at 869m) became one of my favorite memories.
The trail starts near Pak Kung Au with steep stone stairs that test your legs, then opens to rocky paths and mysterious stone huts. The payoff? 360-degree views over the South China Sea, rolling hills, and—if you time it right—a golden sunset that makes every sweaty step worth it.
I filmed the full hike step-by-step because I want others to experience this accessible adventure. No special gear needed—just good shoes, water, and the willingness to go slow.

You can make the hike as long as you like - we did the hike in 10km. You can start from Mui Wo which would add an extra 10km. You can also extend it to Tung Chung which would add another 10km.
We came across a hiker that was doing 38km trail which included Sunset Peak.
We did not come across any water or rest stops along the way. So make sure you pack enough water and food for the hike.
Public transport in and out of the hike is very easy. We caught the bus in and out of the hike.
Vegan Explorer Tip for Hong Kong: City life offers international vegan spots galore (think Beyond burgers and dedicated cafés). For hikes, pack nuts, fruit, and onigiri from 7-Eleven. Lantau even has vegan-friendly cafés near the trailheads.
Hong Kong taught me that nature is never far—even in one of the world’s densest cities. Sometimes the best travel moments happen one stair at a time.
I didn’t realise that Hong Kong is actually made up of 70% forests and national parks. I just though Hong Kong was a concrete jungle. I was so surprised to enjoy the mountains, trails and beaches of Hong Kong.
These stories are my memories archive—gentle, vegan, and unapologetically santai. Whether you’re planning your first slow-travel trip or just need inspiration to slow down at home, I hope they remind you: the world is best savored, not rushed.
